Who says animals lack the ability to remember things?

Whomever stated animals don't have cognitive memory skills apparently never owned an animal. Or their study was too limited. Why?

Well, yesterday (January 11, 2010), my husband took our kitten in to the vet for her very first check-up. Apollo apparently remembered that the last time Rob went dashing up the stairs with the kennel and put the cat in it (a little over a year ago now), the cat didn't return from the vet. *nods*, yes, that was the horrible day our 16-year-old cat, Sir Launcelot passed.

When Rob went upstairs to get the kennel prepared and get Bella off to her check-up, Apollo followed him and immediately began whining. He then sat at the door to Bella's room (the one where her food/water and other items are located) and whined and cried. As the kennel was being carried down the hallway, Apollo kept blocking the way, even going so far as to stand in front of the door and try to make Rob put the kitten back.

I can only imagine what the time away held for the poor animal. But, when the kitten returned home, not only was Apollo elated, he wouldn't leave her side. He literally followed her everywhere all afternoon and evening.

It is good to see that, not only does the dog have the memory of an elephant... he has grown a strong bond with his new kitten. He protects her and looks out for her well being.
