Sunday was such a glorious day; I decided I would take myself and Apollo out on the deck to enjoy the weather. After several attempts at letting Apollo run free in the yard, I resigned to having him on the deck with me (it seems, to him, freedom means he can freely scratch himself to death). I managed to get him to lie nicely on the deck.
So, we sat in the sun, me reading and Apollo insisting on my petting him. This was great, until Apollo got restless. I put my book away, took my glasses off, and decided to lie in the sun for a while and just relax. (This, in turn, prompted Apollo to relax in the shade nearby.)
After a while, I heard a strange squeaky-chirpy sound over my right shoulder. I wasn’t sure what it was, so I slowly turned my head – so as not to startle whatever little creature was near me. There I was, almost nose-to-nose with a beautiful green hummingbird. (I had known a discernable humming noise could be heard when these tiny creatures were flitting nearby, but never had I known you could hear them squeak-chirp, it was really cool.)
Startled, I just sat there for a minute – as we stared at each other… myself laying on my stomach on a deck chair, the hummingbird hovering close to me. After a while, the bird flitted over to the Meadow Sage on the deck, then to the hummingbird feeder before flitting away.
I found myself wishing I’d had my camera outside with me, because that would have definitely been a picture with a very unique perspective. It seems these little creatures are as curious about us as we are about them. I was surprised he was at ease enough to get that close.
Hopefully there will be another opportunity to get a picture of one flitting near me this summer - I'd love to add that to my portfolio.
