So, last night I put 3 eggs on to boil. A little way into the process of boiling, my neighbor came over to inquire about our dog kennel - which we were selling because our dog no longer uses it. So, I proceed to turn the heat down to low to allow the eggs to cook more slowly while I go over to help the neighbor set up the kennel and show them how to work the latch mechanism.
I return home after chatting with her kids for a while and then having a little chat with her outside. The house is filled with smoke, the smoke alarm has apparently gone off, the dog is panicked, and the kitchen looks like a mortar went off on the stove.
That's right... somehow the water got low enough for one of the eggs to get overheated and it exploded in an extravagant fashion... and there is nasty smelling smoke everywhere from the pot being too low. Ick!
I frantically run through the house opening windows and turning on fans... then begin to clean the kitchen up. Then, I discovered I needed to reset the alarm in order to avoid another residual alarm going off in the night... so I had to call the hubby and get his help. Around midnight, I finally turned in to get a fitful rest so I could get up this morning and exercise before reporting to work. I didn't sleep too well, needless to say... but, oddly, I'm not tired today. Must be adrenaline.
I figure I need to remove everything from the kitchen (including the curtains and the rugs) and wash it all to get the smoky smell and possible egg smegma out of it. I have also decided I might as well wash the window treatments in the upstairs living and dining rooms to make sure there is no residual smoky nastiness smell... so I will be a busy girl this weekend. Then I will give the kitchen a good cleaning again - just to make sure no little eggy bits are stuck anywhere to make a putrid smell later.
I have learned a lesson, never trust that a pot that is unwatched and on low heat will act the way it is expected to act.
