This morning, I read an article praising stay at home moms. Ironically, it was shared by a stay at home mom...and every single person who praised the article was, you guessed it, a stay at home mom.
Here it is: http://www.weareglory.com/blog/fathers-you-cant-afford-a-stay-at-home-mom
Now...first off, I get it. Daycare is expensive. We use a home daycare, which runs us $360 a week for our two boys (that's $1440 a month, $18,720 a year). If we were to go to a center, that cost would go up to about $500, since our oldest son is pre-K age and we would want him to take some courses, including Spanish.
There are families out there that simply can't make this work. That's completely understandable.
Working mothers do many of the same things listed in this article. (Take it from the horse's mouth if you will.)
I work 40 hours a week.
I come home and make home cooked meals for my family.
I wash clothes.
I clean house.
I feed animals.
I play with my children.
I shop for groceries and necessities.
I run errands.
I do art projects and learning projects with my boys.
I teach my boys Spanish and sign language.
I do clothing repair.
I sew fun costumes for my boys.
I am the family event planner.
I am a baker when I need to be (sometimes, I realize I can't do it all and hire a bakery to do the honors.)
I play the role of entertainer, comforter, medicine woman, trouble shooter, boo-boo healer, playmate, story teller, personal chef, chauffeur.
Mind you, I am in no way trying to pat myself on the back here, I don't do these things on my own. My husband huffs a fair amount of the tasks as well... including handy man, lawn care and plant expert, electrical engineer, plumber, security authority, garbage collector, dish washer, and ironing expert. If he isn't with me doing the errands, etc, will be at home caring for the boys.
I venture a guess that the husbands of stay at home moms are usually just as helpful...and they have to fund the household on their own.
In my opinion, the article posted above seems to emphasize these activities to the point of glorification. Working parents do all of that, too. We just leave the house for 9-10 hours daily to make money for our family.
